Daily Prompt: Mr. Sandman by Krista on March 23, 2014
What kind of sleeper are you? Do you drop off like a stone and awaken refreshed, or do you need pitch black and silence to drift off to dream?
A train ride can be the perfect place to nap, assuming I have a seat. It is the rhythms of the ride that make me nod off. There is the physical sensation of the slow and steady rocking of the train car. And that rocking of the car has a sound which is gentle despite its massive size. The steel wheels rolling over the seams of the rails provides another layer of sound. The movement of the car and sound of the wheels are a duet that lulls me into a state of calm. Usually I do not remember drifting off. But I am aware of waking up. It is a quick rest for my brain. Of course, night-time would provide a most restorative slumber, but I can tolerate the day as well. Train. Roll. Rock. Doze.
